The new Mariner Skills Training Center in San Diego provides Officer of the Deck and other training courses for the Navy. The state-of-the-art training facility will train recruits for years to come, so it was important that the building looked and played the part. With the newest training technology available, the designers chose raised access floors with factory-laminated finishes to create a solid foundation for the educational facility.
The highlight of this flooring project was the range of finish options used throughout the entire facility. Different areas of the building house different types of training, so it was important that the floor finishes could stand up to the wear and tear that would inevitably occur. The aesthetics of the building were also important, so MCG created unique patterns and layouts with different finishes to create more interest, while still maintaining access to the underfloor plenum. The designers utilized factory-laminated porcelain, linoleum and High Pressure Laminate finishes throughout the building, creating a resilient flooring that will withstand the test of time. These finishes were laminated to each individual panel before they were shipped, which helped speed installation, while still offering a variety of finish options.
Another major benefit of utilizing raised access floors in this building was Underfloor Service Distribution. By routing power and data cabling in the underfloor plenum, you increase the facility’s flexibility. When furniture needs to be rearranged or new technology is introduced, the cabling can be rerouted under the floor to be delivered wherever it is needed. The building also features PosiTile carpet tiles in varying colors strategically placed throughout different areas of the facility. Each PosiTile carpet module is engineered to match one-to-one with our access floor panels. The combination of carpet and panel preserves the flexibility of the Underfloor Service Distribution system and allows for the reuse of carpet tiles during layout changes. In a training facility like this, it’s hard to predict what future technology or best practices will look like. Raised floors will help future proof the space to prepare for these unforeseen changes.
Utilizing raised access floors with Underfloor Service Distribution in a new training facility like this sets the building up for future success. The building will be able to keep up with the inevitable changes required as processes and technology change. The designers were able to future proof the space without sacrificing their creative vision. By creating unique patterns with the finishes, they got the perfect combination of aesthetics and practicality that will benefit the recruits and instructors for years to come.
